Step 1: Accept Jesus on His Own Term PDF Print E-mail

The chapter opens with a verse introducing Lazarus and his sisters, Mary and Martha. It also gave a description of Mary as the one who anointed Jesus with ointment and wiped his feet with her hair.

After this, we read that a servant approached Jesus, telling him that the man he loved is dying. Notice that Mary and Martha referred to Lazarus as the man you love and not by his name. I see this as their way of putting pressure on the Lord. They seem to say, 'If you really love our brother, you will come and heal him'. Notice that even at the start of the episode, Jesus already knew the result. After two days, Jesus decided to go to see Lazarus, which he already knew was dead. His disciples tried to convince him not to go. But Jesus went.

The sisters pressured Jesus to come and heal Lazarus but he did not go. The disciples pressured Jesus not to go to Bethany fearing his death but he still went.

This says that in our relationship with Jesus, we need to let Jesus do what he wants. Accept Jesus as he is.

The sisters did not want their brother to die and the disciples did not want Jesus to die. Both the disciples and the sisters were concerned rightly so. There was probably fear, but they still let Jesus take charge of the situation. First step then is to accept Jesus on his terms.

We cannot tell Jesus what to do and what not to do. We cannot bribe Jesus to do what we want. He is Lord so he can do anything he wants.
