The Ideal Wife PDF Print E-mail

This passage shows us the ideal wife. As Genesis says, she is a helper to her man.

This passage also shows that the wife is not a weakling. Three times, the word strength or strong is mentioned as one of her attributes. The passage also says that she is more precious than jewels. Her husband trusts her because of her wisdom. She is not idle but always is on the look out for ways to satisfy the needs of her husband.

The woman is also pictured as entrepreneurial. She is prudent because she does not squander money. She considers a field first before buying it. She is wise in her investments. She sees value and takes pride in her work. She is also generous. She is wise because she can plan for the future. Her husband and children are clothed properly. Her husband is respected because she takes care of him and his family. And her husband in return takes pride in her.

Her children also are God fearing because they rise up and call her blessed. Her husband will not want to look for another woman because for him, she is the best. This passage,

Her children rise up and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her: "Many women have done excellently, but you surpass them all"”

is sometimes applied to the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Her beauty is not physical. Her beauty comes from her character. Her fear of the Lord radiates to give her beauty. 1 Peter 3:3-4 says,

"Let not yours be the outward adorning with braiding of hair, decoration of gold, and wearing of fine clothing, but let it be the hidden person of the heart with the imperishable jewel of a gentle and quiet spirit, which in God's sight is very precious”.

In the Old Testament, we read that Sarah and Abraham were old when they moved to Canaan. But despite their old age, Sarah was still beautiful, so beautiful in fact, that two kings wanted her!

Although the man is the head of the family, the woman is not to be a doormat. She is to be her own person, respected and honored. And it is the man's job to make sure that this is done!
