Theme:

This is the third Sunday of Easter. The readings continue to speak about the risen Jesus. The first reading is the first recorded sermon of Peter. The second reading is from St. Peter's first letter. The gospel reading recounts how the two disciples met the risen Jesus on their way to Emmaus.

Questions:

Day 1: The first reading is the first recording sermon of the Peter. This happened during Pentecost, right after the Holy Spirit descended on the disciples.

  • How did St. Peter describe Jesus?

  • According to Peter, how did God attest to Jesus?

  • What did St. Peter mean when he said that it is impossible for Jesus to be held by death?

Day 2: St. Peter quoted the psalm to prove that the resurrection happened.

  • In the quoted psalm, the psalmist was saying that God is at his right hand so he will not be shaken. What does this mean?

  • Aside from applying to Jesus, this psalm also applies to you. Why should you not be shaken if God is with you?

  • What will you say to the Father?

Day 3: The responsorial psalm is the psalm that St. Peter quoted in his sermon.

  • The psalmist said that those who choose another god multiply their sorrows. What did he mean by this?

  • The other gods that the psalmist speak about are things that we put above God himself. What are these things that you put before God?

  • How will you get rid of these gods and instead turn back to the true God? What do you want to tell Jesus?

Day 4: The second reading is a continuation of the second reading the previous Sunday.

  • Here, St. Peter says that we live in exile. What did he mean by that? How should we live in exile?

  • St. Peter also said that we were ransomed. What does ransomed mean?

  • How are we ransomed? What did he mean?

Day 5: St. Peter continues to speak about Jesus in the second reading

  • He mentioned that “Jesus was reveal for your sake”. How is Jesus revealed to you?

  • St. Peter also said that our faith and hope are set on God. What did he mean by that?

  • How can we set out faith and hope on God?

Day 6: The gospel reading narrates the episode where two disciples were running from Jerusalem to Emmaus. Some commentators say that they were running away because they were afraid that they might be arrested. As they were talking, Jesus appeared to them and joined them.

  • Compare Cleopas' answer to Jesus and Peter's sermon. What do you observe? Are they similar in theme?

  • How is Cleopas' answer different from St. Peter's preaching?

  • In Peter's sermon, he was full of confidence and power. But Cleopas and his companion were depressed and confused. What was the cause of the difference?

Day 7: As they proceeded with their journey, Jesus began to teach them.

  • How did Jesus describe them when he started to teach them? What did he mean by that?

  • The disciples recognized Jesus when he broke the bread, which is the eucharist. How can you recognize Jesus in the eucharist?

  • What did the disciples do after they recognized Jesus. Considering that they were scared when they left Jerusalem, what made them rush back to Jerusalem during the night when it was more dangerous to travel?

  • The experience of the resurrection give excitement and joy to people who are depressed. Jesus is risen and has given us hope. Are you in a situation of despair or difficulty? Because Jesus is risen, there is hope. He has power over death and he will give you victory. Do you believe this? What do you want to say to Jesus?
