Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ Ephesians 1:3
In this verse, St. Paul tells us God the Father has blessed us with every spiritual blessing. He did not say 'some' spiritual blessing, but St. Paul said, 'every' spiritual blessing. What does this mean? This means we have all the spiritual blessings we will ever need! We will never lack blessings from God. It means we have an abundance. Since God is good, he gives only what is good. In fact, he loves us so much, he gives us the best! And he gives in abundance! He did not give these spiritual blessings for us to hoard and keep. He gave these to us to use for his glory. So the question is, how can we use what we have to give glory to God? God gave us our lives. What should we do to our lives? We have to submit our lives to him. There is no better gift we can give God than to submit our lives in obedience. Jesus himself said, “If you love me, you will obey my commands”. So the first thing we need to give God is love. God calls us to a loving relationship. He is not a vengeful God. He is a loving God. In fact, he is Love. Christianity is not a matter of rules and regulations. It is a loving encounter with Jesus. If our Christianity is based only on good works, we are missing the true meaning of our faith. Jesus must be the foundation of our faith. This relationship with Jesus will make us do good. Good works come from our personal relationship with Jesus. We develop a relationship with Jesus by spending time with him. We need to be honest to ourselves. How much time do I spend in silent prayer. When I come to Jesus, do I rattle my wish list or do I sit there just to be with him? Without a personal prayer time, we cannot develop a deep relationship with Jesus. How much time do I spend reading scripture? We cannot know God without knowing scripture. We cannot know his love without reading his word. Our goal in life is to be a saint, meaning, to be one with God for eternity. To achieve this, we learn from those who have achieved this, from the canonized saints. Based on the writings of saints I have read, all of them are deeply immersed in scripture. Lastly, how is my devotion to the sacraments? The sacraments are signs of God's love for us. So, when we receive the Blessed Sacrament, we are receiving Jesus. If I receive Jesus at mass and if I love him, I will want to receive him often and I would like to spend time with him. We also know that we cannot receive him while we are in a state of mortal sin. So we go to confession regularly. Through confession, we express our love for God by repenting from our sins. Jesus said, “God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.” Giving back to God is not just doing good works. Giving back to God is worshiping him in spirit and truth. He must be worshipped as he is. We accept him as he is. This is worshiping God in spirit and truth.
