Fellowship with God PDF Print E-mail

But I say that the things which the Gentiles sacrifice, they sacrifice to demons, and not to God, and I don’t desire that you would have fellowship with demons. You can’t both drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons. You can’t both partake of the table of the Lord, and of the table of demons. Or do we provoke the Lord to jealousy? Are we stronger than he?
1 Corinthians 10:20-22

Before I knew the Lord, I always thought being a Catholic was obeying a set of rules and all that matters is doing good to others. In my ignorance and perhaps arrogance, I held on to my mistaken beliefs. It was only by searching for the truth that I realized how wrong I was.

Being Catholic is not just receiving the sacraments. It is not memorizing the scripture. It is not  doing good to others. It is not even preaching and writing about Jesus! Being Catholic is to have fellowship with God.

It is having a personal relationship with Jesus. It is to love him and accept him as Lord and Savior. St. Paul warned us we should not have fellowship with demons. Our fellowship is with God and not with demons.

If we read 1 Corinthians 10, we see this was what the Corinthians were doing. They were baptized in Jesus. They received his Body and Blood, yet, St. Paul still warned them of fellowship with demons. When St. Paul said this, he was talking about the idolatry of the children of Israel. What is idolatry except that it is worshiping other gods. When I come to worship God, do I worship the One True God or do I worship the god of my imagination?

I still struggle to worship the true God. He continues to reveal himself to me and often, I find it hard to accept him as he is. Yet, this is what I should do, because not doing so is idolatry - which is having fellowship with demons!

When we receive communion, we receive the entire Jesus, his Body and Blood, his Soul and Divinity. In effect, we receive his entire person. This includes his teachings. Many people think that we can pick and choose what to believe in the Church teachings. This is a great lie. To receive Jesus in the eucharist, we have to accept everything about him, including his teachings as revealed to and taught by the Catholic Church. Anything less is idolatry because anything less means we are worshiping a false God!

Therefore, being a Catholic is to have fellowship with Jesus. This is why the eucharist is the source and summit of our faith. It is receiving the entire Jesus! It is to accept him as he is, including things we find hard to accept. It is making him first and foremost in my life. It is letting him take charge of my life.

Lord Jesus, forgive me for not accepting you as you are. I want you to be the Lord of my life. I want you to rule over my life. Teach me to trust in you.
